Kanye West, also known as Ye, caused quite a stir in 2021 when he bought a beach house in Malibu, CA for $57.25 million. The house was designed by renowned architect Tadao Ando, but West reportedly stripped it of its windows, doors, and electrical features, as well as many of the architect’s signature finishes. However, he never finished the renovation he had planned. Now, West is once again raising eyebrows by putting the unfinished structure back on the market for $53 million.
According to Jason Oppenheim of the Oppenheim Group, who is the listing agent and also stars in “Selling Sunset,” it will cost several million dollars to complete the house. West’s original vision was to remove all the windows and electricity and install large generators to turn the space into a “bomb shelter,” as reported by TMZ. Additionally, West is facing a lawsuit from the contractor and caretaker of the home, who alleges that labor codes were violated.
Photos in the listing show the beachfront structure in its original condition before West’s ownership. Other photos show the current state of the exterior, with the concrete shell exposed to the elements and the railings and metal trim rusted and corroded.
Although West’s property is surrounded by homes that are reportedly worth much less than his $53 million asking price, he did get a good deal on the house, which was initially listed for $75 million due to its connection to Ando. Ando, an 82-year-old architect from Osaka, won the prestigious Pritzker Prize in 1995 and has designed residences for various investors, philanthropists, and celebrities, including West’s ex-wife Kim Kardashian.
The original architect and general contractor for the home was renowned firm Marmol Radziner. The house has 4,000 square feet of interior space, four bedrooms, and five bathrooms, as well as approximately 1,500 square feet of outdoor decks. The listing highlights Ando’s use of natural light to create a warm atmosphere and harmonize with the surroundings.
Currently, all interior finishes have been removed from the property, leaving it as a blank canvas. Oppenheim describes the house as having retained its architectural integrity and value, despite the removal of some dated features. The construction of the house was completed in 2013.
Located on the beach side of Malibu Road, the house is conveniently close to top-tier restaurants, clubs, and boutiques. It is unclear why West has decided to sell the property, but it has been reported that he lost some sponsors and partnerships, including Adidas, after making antisemitic statements. Additionally, West reportedly suffered a six-figure loss on a home he purchased across the street from Kardashian in Hidden Hills.
